About Our Goats

We maintain a herd of Boer goats. These are a large breed of meat goat that was developed in South Africa for rugged conditions like we have in the Sierra Nevada Mountains. Adults range from 200-250 lbs.

Goats are browsers. Their preferred diet is a wide array of brush they nibble on from their knees and as high as they can reach standing up on their hind legs, about 6 feet. Sheep are grazers, if you're looking to control open grass lands you'd likely do better with sheep or cattle.

Goats are curious, excellent climbers. They don't mind flat areas but they really enjoy hills, slopes, rocks, down trees to climb over, on and on.

What are they going to do?

The goats are going to eliminate the dense brush on your property. They'll open up areas of your property you've not seen in years, giving you access to come in after they leave to further eliminate noxious weeds like poison oak, blackberry, manzanita, and other brush.

How do you protect them from coyotes, mountain lions, bears, and wandering dogs?

The goats will be fenced in while they are working. We will either bring in portable electric netting or we will make sure you're existing fencing will work. Additionally, the goats travel with livestock guardian dogs, who are with them 24/7/365 to deter predators.

How much will this cost?

Every project is different and we will work with you on a quote.

We aim to be affordable. But also understand that you're paying for our time, equipment, experience, and of course the use of our livestock. If your property is fenced and secure it will be more affordable than if we have to spend days cutting line to install portable netting.

The minimum project cost will be $1000.

How far are you willing to travel?

Our aim in providing this service is to benefit our community. Ideally, we'd like to stay within 10-15 miles of the farm.

What size of projects are you looking for?

With the size of our herd we think smaller projects of .5 acres to a few acres are ideal. You may see large commercial operations show up and clear a park in 2-3 days with hundreds of goats... we can connect you with those larger operations but we're aiming at residential and smaller commercial projects to start.

How fast are they going to work?

It really depends on the scope of the project. Boer goats eat 2%-3% of their body weight per day, for an adult that's 4-6 lbs. The more there is to eat the longer it'll take.

Can I pet the goats when they are on my property?

Yes, our goats are friendly.
